The Borough of Closter, New Jersey is located in scenic Bergen County, which is just to the Northwest of New York City. Closter is a small but beatutiful community and is located in Bergen County, New Jersey. Closter is located just under eighteen miles from New York City and just seven miles from Yonkers, NY. Homes in Closter are predominantly single family, but there are some more dense, multi-family units scattered throughout the community.

Closter is also rich in ethnic and cultural diversity. The community prides itself on the outstanding support of the dedicated Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Corps and with the highly trained Police Department. Although public transportation supports the many residents who commute to and from New York City, Rockland County and other parts of the Bergen County area, residents continue to enjoy this "side" of the river with a combination of nature centers, brooks, wild life refuge and a recreational pond for fishing and ice skating. Today Closter's population is approximately 8,200 people and growing. Closter is set on 3.3 square miles of which 230 acres is open space and woodlands.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Closter evolved into a suburb of New York City, which is how Closter exists today. Closter considers itself “The Hub of the Northern Valley” due to many shopping centers, recreational facilities, parks, places of worship, as well as medical and legal resources. There are 230 acres of open space and protected woodlands within Closter.

Students attend Closter Public Schools for kindergarten through eighth grade. Schools within the district are Hillside Elementary School and Tenakill Middle School, and High school students attend Northern Valley Regional High School located in neighboring Demarest. Northern Valley Regional High School hosts students from Closter, Demarest and Haworth.
